Former Iowa Attorney General Tom Miller has established a new firm, Miller Monitoring and Consulting, LLC. His new company will focus on monitoring state and federal settlements. Joining him will be his son, Matt Miller, a former Illinois Assistant Attorney General, Scott Wegner, who will serve as Chief Operating Officer and Kevin McCarthy, who will serve as General Counsel. Miller’s new practice, based in Des Moines, will monitor settlements and consent decrees and assist regulators throughout the compliance process.
Monitors, sometimes referred to as independent compliance officers, are well established in the American legal system and are frequently used in judicial and regulatory matters for compliance oversight. Monitors are also employed by a variety of other public officials at the state, federal and local levels.
Tom Miller served as Iowa Attorney General for 40 years, the longest serving attorney general in U.S. history. State attorneys general often spend years on a case, including investigation and negotiation, while multiple other cases beg for attention. Monitors allow these officials to direct their attention to new cases. Tom has been a strong advocate for the use of monitors throughout his career and brings important experience and skills to his new monitoring business:
· He was involved in state attorney general multistate litigation cases for 40 years.
· He has held a leadership role in significant multistate cases – Microsoft, tobacco, bank mortgage, and for-profit colleges – more than any other attorney general.
· Among attorneys general, he was the strongest and most frequent advocate for utilizing monitors.
· He was the attorney general most frequently working with monitors – seeing their successes and failures, and often working with them to ensure compliance.
· He brings an important balance of personal integrity and judgement to being a monitor. He believes strongly in the rule of law and compliance, while bringing an equally strong sense of fairness for the monitored company.
